As a Master of Library and Information Science candidate in 2012, I wanted to gain some experience in a public library working with teens. This summer I had the privelege of working under the guidance of Dawn Rutherford, Teen Services Coordinator, in the Sno-Isle Public Library System at the Mountlake Terrace branch.
These are the main goals
- Supervise and evaluate Book Buddies program (teens tutoring second and third graders in reading skills)
- Create a themed booklist and book display for Karate
- Assist with planning Teen Read Month for October. Create a list of program suggestions to represent ALA theme Picture-It
- Assist children's librarian at Mountlake Terrace Library branch in the Tour de Terrace parade.
- Help to plan and implement Beat the Clock Games Day
This internship has been fun and interesting, and one of the best parts of working here this summer has been meeting other librarians and gaining insight into their daily acitivities. Dawn also coordinated a tour of the Sno-Isle Libraries service center in Marysville, where I was able to interview and chat with folks in acquisitions, reference, children's coordinator, and marketing positions.
Although I have learned a great deal in my Master's program in the first year, I believe that the hands-on experience I have gained has been quite valuable to me. Please explore the links to the left to see my summer work at the library.
